How Purses Have Evolved Over Time

Purses are a staple in every woman’s closet, allowing them to carry important items like their wallet, keys and phone. They can also be used to elevate everyday looks, adding a little bit of finesse to office days and dinner dates with girlfriends. Whether you’re into vintage or modern, girly or tomboy, the best purses can be worn by everyone and look good with everything.

When it comes to purses, there are tons of options ranging from affordable to high end designer bags. Low end designers include Vera Bradley, Dooney & Bourke and Steve Madden as well as Coach and Kate Spade while high end designer purses come from brands such as Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermes and Burberry. These designer purses can range from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on how much you want to spend and the designer label you’re going for.

In the past purses were more utilitarian than fashionable, but over time they started to evolve in conjunction with fashion and the need for people to carry more personal items. For example, before the sixteenth century clothing didn’t have pockets so both men and women carried small bags with them secured to their girdles.

In the nineteenth century a man named Samuel Parkinson had the idea for the modern day purse after purchasing a set of travelling cases and trunks for himself and his wife. He wanted to create a bag that was just the right size to hold all of their belongings as they were traveling around the world for business. The purse he envisioned was not only functional but it looked beautiful as well and that is what gave birth to the modern day purse.
