A Purse Is More Than Just An Accessory

A purse, a handbag, a tote or whatever you call it can be an extension of your personal style. Whether you use it to carry the necessities or show off your taste in accessories, a designer purse is more than just an accessory—it’s an investment in quality and a statement about your lifestyle.

Purses are handheld bags that usually come with small straps or handles. They are often more casual than handbags, but can also be quite elegant. Some designers use purses as a canvas for their artwork, combining sleek shapes and luxury materials to create unique designs.

Throughout history, purses have evolved as the needs of women and men changed. Earlier purses were very utilitarian, designed to carry coins and other small personal items. During the early middle ages, purses were shaped like small pouches with a drawstring closure and worn around the owner’s girdle using a metal clasp.

The reticule, the precursor to modern handbags, emerged in the 19th century and offered a flat surface ideal for decorative embellishment. Artists like Hilde Wagner-Ascher, who was connected to the Wiener Werkstatte collective, used a purse as a blank canvas to create her own graphic designs.

When shopping for a designer purse, consider size and silhouette, pockets, the hardware and the materials. A purse should complement the overall look of your outfit, and be durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of everyday life. A calfskin bag is typically tougher than exotic leathers, and will hold up better when exposed to moisture and sun. Be wary of a purse with too many seams, as this can be an indication that it is less than well made.
